The smell of barbecue and the sounds of live rock filledthe University of Ottawa campus May 14.

From afar, the lawn in front of U of O’s Tabaret Hall may have resembled the scene of another wild party. But this time the revelers were student volunteers and several hundred homeless Ottawa residents.

Project Homeless Connect Ottawa was a collaboration between U of O, Carleton University, Algonquin College and La Cité Collégiale, aimed at providing Ottawa’s homeless with essential services.

"Help for the homeless, above all, comes through better access to basic goods and services,” said the organizers in a statement.

Members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity spent 36 hours in a makeshift shelter outside the Minto Centre Feb. 23-24 to help out the Ottawa homeless.
The second annual "TKE in a box" fundraiser raises money for the Ottawa Mission, a non-profit, faith-based ministry that provides food, clothing and shelter for the homeless of Ottawa.

“We’re not giving to the homeless, but a charity that helps the homeless through counselling, food and shelter,” said Jamie Atyeo, the philanthropy chair of TKE.

Because of the high addiction rates in homeless people, Atyeo urged students to try to volunteer at a shelter or to grab them a coffee rather than to give them money.

While the Christmas season is associated with lots of food, too many people are still in need, especially during the recession.

But the some local musicians are trying to change that.

On Nov. 25, the fifth annual Feed the Homeless benefit concert was held at Zaphod Beeblebrox.

It featured performances by Arms of a Girl, Huntley Slim, Jill Zmud, DJ’s Kerri and Arun.

Zmud, a Carleton graduate, said she was very excited to be part of the event because it had people giving back in a “concrete” way. Every $5 ticket pays for three homeless people’s dinners at the Shepherds of Good Hope.
