OUA recruits Smart for marketing committee

The OUA has recruited Carleton men’s basketball head coach Dave Smart to its newly-formed marketing committee, which will focus on promoting Ontario university basketball.

Committee chair Darren Cates said the committee enlisted Smart as coaches’ rep because of the success of Carleton’s basketball program.

“Carleton’s built a very successful basketball program, and not just on the court,” said Cates, referring to the program’s marketability.

He said the annual Capital Hoops Classic, a basketball game between the Ravens and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees held in front of thousands of fans at Scotiabank Place, is an example of the basketball atmosphere the OUA would like to see more of.

“We want that environment,” he said.

Ravens reclaim OUA East title

A rivalry as big as the game itself, and a victory just as rewarding, the Carleton men’s varsity basketball team defeated the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 78-64 Mar. 6 in the Ravens’ Nest.

The win secured Carleton the Ontario University Athletics’ (OUA) East championship title.

The game started off slow for the Ravens as the Gee-Gees came out strong, capturing the first points of the game and maintaining a dominant lead throughout the beginning of the first quarter.

It was midway through the first quarter when the Ravens reclaimed their territory.

Why so mean, OUA

Before the start of this year’s water polo season, would-be captain of the men’s varsity team, Gordon Campbell, was told he could not play because of a mix-up with his credits.

Ontario University Athletics (OUA) requires that athletes complete three credits per semester in order to compete on a varsity team.

Although this rule is important to keep teams from having wringers, the OUA panel made the wrong decision in throwing out Cameron’s appeal.

Cameron had no intention to break the OUA rule or cheat the varsity system.

He specifically took courses this past summer to remain eligible for varsity after he missed a semester due to a shoulder injury.
