The likelihood of a referendum on undergraduates’ membership in the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) remains unclear.

The executives of Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) will ask the provincial office of the CFS about the status of a petition bearing more than 2,100 signatures in favour of a referendum, in accordance with a motion passed at council Nov. 19.

They will also ask that the validity of the petition be considered in light of a counter-petition circulated on campus.

The motion passed was amended from its original wording, which required CUSA executives to ensure that the petition was acknowledged and a referendum was held.

CFS-Ontario chairperson Shelley Melanson has denied receiving the notarized petition, which was delivered Sept. 29.
