Carleton’s women’s basketball team held their breath Jan. 22 as a last-second layup by Queen’s University wobbled around the rim before bouncing out.
The team exhaled as the buzzer sounded, finalizing the Lady Ravens’ 64-62 victory over the Golden Gaels at the Ravens’ Nest, and giving them sole possession of first place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) east division.
The 10-4 Ravens struggled to find offensive cohesion throughout the game, losing many scoring opportunities to bad passes and turnovers.
Both teams’ offences performed lethargically in the second half, but as a sign of excitement to come, Carleton first-year guard Jessica Resch hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the Ravens a 40-37 advantage going into the final quarter of play.
Fifth-year forward Ines Jelic once again led the Ravens offensively, contributing 17 points and two clutch free throws with 20 seconds remaining, giving Carleton a four-point lead.
However, Queen’s charged down the court and hit a three-pointer to bring the score to 63-62.
With time winding down, the Gaels fouled Carleton forward Ashleigh Cleary, who made one of two free-throw attempts.
With a two-point lead and under ten seconds to go, the last ditch layup by Queen’s fell harmlessly back to Carleton’s possession.
Carleton’s next action will be a mid-week game against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Jan. 27 for the fourth annual Capital Hoops Classic at ScotiaBank Place.
